Honoring Mother: A Blessing Way Ceremony, By Jeannine Parvati Baker There is a tribe in Africa who count the birthday of a child from the day the child is thought of in its mother's mind. On that day, a woman goes out and sits under a tree. She quietly sits and listens until she can hear her child's song. When she has heard that song she returns to the village and teaches it to the man who is to be that child's father, so that they can sing the song when they make love, inviting the child to join them. The mother then sings this song to the child in her womb and teaches it to the midwives, who sing it when the child is born. And the villagers learn the song so that whenever the child cries or hurts itself, they pick it up, hold it in their arms, and sing the song. It is also sung when the young man or woman goes through a rite of passage, marries, and then for a last time, when he or she is about to die. |

![]() Goddess Beads An activity that is sometimes part of a Blessing Way ceremony is making a necklace for the celebrated woman. Each participant brings a special bead to add to the strand and the necklace or bracelet is assembled there at the ceremony. Each guest will sometimes tell why she chose the bead she did. I was once part of an online Blessing Way with a group of friends. We all sent a bead plus a message card to one person in charge. She assembled the necklace and sent it to the recipient with all of the message cards enclosed. I always try to give a goddess bead because the Venus of Willendorf form is representative to me of a woman full of life, a woman full of child, a woman as she is meant to be. Each stoneware bead is approximately 5/8 of an inch tall.
Fertility Rabbit Beads Long known as a symbol of fertility these cute bone rabbit beads are the perfect touch for your good luck necklace or earrings. These rabbits measure just under one inch wide and a half inch tall. The threading hole goes vertically through.
Spiral Goddess Charms Make your own adornment or add to your Blessing Way beaded necklace with these pewter spiral goddess charms. These charms measure 1 1/4" tall. Other ideas for these charms include earrings, zipper pulls, or bookmark toppers.
